kero08The flowering of cherry blossoms was officially announced. In a few days, cherry blossoms will bloom all at once.

The other day, I went out for a drink with one of my friends, who is my neighbor and the same age as I. Ever since we became friends a few years ago by coincidence, we often go out for drinks together. It is great to have a friend like her because we don’t have to care about catching the last train or putting on make-up.

On the way back home, she said, “ Look, ” and stopped in front of a cherry blossom by the roadside. The young and still thin cherry blossom was already in full bloom.

“ Oh, she did it again.”

We nodded in agreement.

Last spring, and this spring too, the gaps between the highs and lows of the temperature has been big. During winter, it became very warm for a couple of days like spring and then return to a very cold winter again.

The same cherry blossom we were talking about bloomed very early last spring. We saw some other young cherry blossoms reaching full bloom at early stages too. When most of cherry blossoms bloomed with the arrival of spring, those young cherry blossoms had already fallen and all was left were its leaves.

I suppose the old cherry blossoms know spring better. The cycle of cold days followed by warm ones is already instilled in them. So they are not swayed by the fake spring. I guess their amount of experiences is bigger than the young cherry blossoms.

We recalled talking about the same subject last year in front of this tree.

“Maybe, she was flattered with herself because of the little bit of warmth.”

“She is still young.”

We giggled and hurried home.

We finished drinking earlier than usual because we both had early mornings the next day. Maybe we’ve become more mature. Or, we know we would end up cursing ourselves next morning if we didn’t call off the party at that point.

Coming across a long row of cherry blossoms, we looked up at them and found that they were not flowering at all yet. They know the right time to bloom and they are waiting for it. It was impressive.

But still, I think the young cherry blossoms should bloom when they want to. Spring will come again and again.

To be honest, we admire the young cherry blossom in full bloom which we were distancing from.

These days, the inner “cleaning” switch in me has unusually turned me on to throw away many things.

First of all, I wanted to do something with the bed, which was loosing its balance. I regretted that I bought a cheap one on the Internet. I’m not sure if the bed sensed my feeling, but its drawer broke and it lost its balance, so now I have to buy a new one.

Then, I started to feel like throwing away the TV unit and decided to do so as well. As long as it kept the TV on it, it was doing its job. But I just got bored with it.

This had happened to me before. I suddenly got bored with my previous TV unit and sold it a second-hand shop without any plans to get a new one. So my TV had just been on the floor for a while.

わからんMeanwhile, I had a dinner with a guy I wanted to be closer. But our conversation didn’t heat up. I felt uncomfortable, wondering what to say. Then, though I don’t remember the flow of our conversation, I told him that my TV had been just on the floor because I threw away my TV unit. He widened his eyes in surprise and said:

“You threw away your TV unit without any plans to get a next one?”

Then he also asked me what I was going to do without a TV unit, which supposedly was an essential furniture. I had never given a thought about the necessity of a TV unit. So I just replied, “Well, I’ll wait and see.”

“I can’t believe you spontaneously threw away your TV unit,”  he jokingly said while having a beer. Looking at the foolish me, it was as if he had found an interesting creature.

I tried to change the topic, but it didn’t make our conversation any more exciting. He didn’t seem to care about me who was bewildered without a clue to capture our conversation. He would sometimes chuckle recalling the conversation, and would mumble, “Why would she throw away a TV unit? That’s so funny.”

Was that the funny part? I didn’t get what was so funny.

We lost in touch afterward, but if he still remembers me, he probably remembers me as the woman who threw away her TV unit. Which is totally disturbing.

Nevertheless I felt very good after getting rid of my TV unit, though my TV was directly on the floor. I proudly tell my friend this story, who was surprised and asked me “Again?”

“But you threw away a TV unit before,” she said.

A little displeased, I asked her sarcastically why she could remember such an old subject. She answered that a TV unit wasn’t something people threw away everyday.

It astounded me that my friend also thought of me as “the woman who throws away TV units”.

She asked me why I would always throw away TV tables. I don’t throw away many TV units, but I replied, “I just get tired of it. All of sudden, I come to dislike it.“

“It is because you never select carefully,” she scolded.

Yes, she is right.

But I’m not promiscuous.

I just haven’t found the right one yet.

店内I recently like the jumbled up atmosphere around the western and northern Exits of Ikebukuro Station.

The other day, I walked into a bean vermicelli shop that I had been attracted to for a while. It is located around the corner of Cinema Rosa.

You can choose from bean vermicelli, noodles and rice (each 380yen) as a staple food to put in the soup, as well as three more toppings (each 100 yen). You could also choose the spiciness. Refill for the staple is free. I think its cost performance is good.

As a spicy foods fan, I chose the medium spicy soup, and added fresh coriander, sliced pork, quail eggs, beef tendon and Jew’s ears. It cost 880yen in total.

麺A young couple sitting next to me was chatting in Chinese and a Spitz’s song covered by a female singer was streaming from the radio. This situation somewhat made me feel like I was in a foreign land.

After the couple left, I was only customer in the shop. So I talked to the waitress, who had a charming smile. She spoke only a little bit of Japanese and our conversation was disjointed, but I got to know that she was a student from Dalian, China. As I was slurping up the vermicelli after our short conversation, she brought me a couple of slices of spam as a service and put them into my bowl,  saying that it was the Chinese’s favorite topping. I looked at the shelf of toppings and realized that spam was called Cow’s fat in Chinese. I thought to myself that I wouldn’t dare choose it, but it was delicious. It convinced me that it was indeed a popular topping among the Chinese.

It was nice to be exposed to foreign food culture even if it was just a little and her kindness touched me. Even if her way of service was a sales technique, I would say it worked indeed, because I went back to the shop three days later.

I recommend this place if you want to feel like being in a foreign atmosphere.
